The 2005 studio tracks from this unofficial release are representative of my contributions to a greater collection of songs that we recorded and disseminated to students at Three Hills Bible College in Alberta, Canada as part of a liturgical workshop led by Scott Baker and Chad Sundin. In the years that followed, there were conversations about a new project and a full refresh of the EarReverent music catalogue. During that time, a few of my own songs were approved by Scott and added to the list. Those songs, including one that Scott and I wrote together, are included with this release. Unfortunately, the hope of any new recording never materialized. This collection of our former recordings seeks to honor that hope and serves as a tribute of praise to Jesus in loving memory of my friend who now resides in His great company.

The following is from an email concerning the meaning of EarReverent music written by its founder and chief contributor, the late Scott Baker
*{edited for context}:

“…First, a little history. The name EarReverent came as a serious joke at first. Serious b/c it states the core idea guiding my songwriting. Joke b/c it's a clever, silly little pun. (I actually had others: EarRational was my name for the heady singersongwriter stuff; and of course there was EarRelevant; EarResistable; and so on, ad infinitum/ad nauseaum) But back to EarReverent. It is intended to communicate the paradox at the heart of my developing philosophy of worship songwriting.

"Ear" means it sounds good, has an appropriate feel, is contemporary, you want to sing it, play it, hear it. "Reverent" means it is orthodox, rooted in a properly worshipful posture not frivolous, Scripturally-based if not directly in quotation of the passages themselves. These two elements combine into a paradox b/c the impulses of "pop" and "contemporary" and "feel" are transitory. The "Ear" impulses are what tempts even those with the highest intentions on the "Reverent" side to *{write poor music}.

So, as is the case with any good paradox, the pun "EarReverent" was always about balancing the contemporary impulses with what we would call the classical or enduring disciplines that keep those impulses from making a disaster of worship music.

The older I get, the more I worry about this balance. I want to create more and more serious music that satisfies the "Reverent" side in BOTH the music and the words. But I still want to observe the primary command of the Psalms: most of what we sing should be a "Joyful Noise."

The tension between these impulses is what ought to discipline the process by which we: write, perform/record, disseminate *{liturgical music}.” - Scott Baker, 11/12/09
